Drug delivery systems

The complex protein- and gene-based drugs of the future cannot be administered by conventional therapies, e.g. by swallowing of tablets. We develop drug delivery systems for new administration routes which deliver the required amount of drug at the right time to a specified region or organ in the body.

Our drug delivery systems are applied at different locations in and at the body, e.g.

in the mouth:

  • Integrated in a dental prostheses (no electronics)
  • Drug delivery is directed towards the buccal mucosa

on the skin:

  • Time-delayed chronotherapy
  • Implemented as a patch on the skin

at the brain:

  • Stimulation or inactivation of neural cells
  • Discrete dosage of drug by silicon microprobes

The technological possibilities of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and especially microfluidics allow us to realize intelligent, highly miniaturized drug delivery systems which enable the best possible therapy.
